Dryer Tips

1. Clothes do not dry
2. Fabric Softener
3. Dryer does not turn on
4. Dryer has no heat

1. Clothes do not dry
Check if the hot air vent at the back of the dryer is attached. If there is no air flow through the dryer going outside, the clothes will not dry or will take too long to dry.

2. Fabric Softener
Different types of fabric softeners achieve similar results, but each has its strengths. Which kind you choose depends on your preferences.  In general, fabric softeners soften fabrics, leave a pleasant scent, reduce wrinkling, and provide static control. When used as directed, they are safe for all washable fabrics.

If the fabric softener is being used mainly for the purpose of softening, the liquid, rinse-added type is the superior choice. All liquid softener mixes directly into the final rinse water which is then agitated throughout the entire laundry load.  For best results, it needs to be used correctly. Here are some guidelines:

  • Use liquid softeners in the final rinse only to avoid contact between the fabric softener and the detergent. Interaction of liquid softener and other laundry products can result in the formation of residue on the load.

  • Do not pour fabric softener directly onto fabrics, as this will result in staining.
  • Always dilute the fabric softener with warm water. Add it directly to the rinse water or use the fabric softener dispenser.
  • When using the fabric softener dispenser, do not interrupt the spin that occurs after the wash cycle. Interruption of this spin can cause the fabric softener to dispense improperly which can cause staining of items within the load.
  • If a fabric softener stain has occurred, moisten the fabric and rub it thoroughly with bar soap. Then rewash the item in the hottest water safe for the fabric.

If the fabric softener is being used mainly for the purpose of controlling static (certainly a problem during cold Canadian winters), then dryer added fabric softener sheets work best. Softener sheets do their work in the dryer where most static is created. Dryer added sheets will provide some softening also, but are not as thorough in softening as the liquid fabric softener. Dryer added sheets must actually touch the garments while tumbling before softening occurs. Here are some tips for proper usage of dryer added sheets:

  • Be sure to add the fabric softener sheet at the same time the load is added to the dryer. If the load is allowed to heat up before the sheet is added, the result is greasy or oily looking spots on the fabric wherever it was touched by the dryer sheet. Polyester fabrics have a particular affinity for the fatty type of molecules that fabric softeners are made of.

  • Overloading the dryer can result in the formation of greasy/oily spots on the garments. If the dryer is overloaded, the dryer sheet cannot tumble freely throughout the load. Only one washer load of laundry should be dried in the dryer at any time.
  • If a stain from a fabric softener sheet has occurred, follow the same procedure as described for removing stains from rinse added fabric softeners: moisten the fabric and rub the stains thoroughly with bar soap. Then rewash the item in the hottest water safe for the fabric. -- Back to Top

3. Dryer does not turn on
Try throwing the breaker. If the dryer starts and stops, the breaker is being tripped. Please call Valley View Appliances to book a service call for your dryer!

4. Dryer has no heat
Check your 30 amp breaker at the main breaker panel of your house. This is a dual breaker, if it trips only half way, there may be enough voltage to run the motor, but not enough to run the element. -- Back to Top
